Frye Regional Cancer Center Plans Annual Bras Because “Fun”draiser

(Hickory, NC) – Bras Because, a night of fun, music and “fun”draising for local cancer patients, is set for Friday, Jan. 26, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at Moretz Mills in Hickory. Bras Because is Frye Regional’s annual fundraiser to help local cancer patients who need assistance with expenses related to their treatment.

The hallmark of Bras Because is a decorated bra competition which features works of art created by individuals, businesses and organizations in our community. Bras are often done in honor or memory of cancer survivors and feature an incredible amount of creativity in the visual presentation and materials used. Winners of the bra competition are announced the evening of the event, and all the entries are showcased at Moretz Mills.

“By supporting Bras Because, our community is helping our friends and neighbors who are fighting cancer by easing some of the financial burden associated with treatment,” said Melissa Teague, Frye’s Cancer Center Director. “Our local restaurants and catering community generously donates the delicious food we serve at the event, local businesses donate the silent auction items we’re able to sell and others donate their time to help plan this amazing, and uplifting, event. It’s wonderful to see how our community comes together to support our cancer patients.”

In 2017, the average Bras Because grant received by a cancer patient who applied for assistance was $250. Most of the grants were used to provide transportation cards to help defray the cost of traveling to and from treatment, assistance with prescription pain medications and for counseling to help patients cope with their emotions related to treatment.

Monday, Jan. 22 – Decorated bra entries (applications available online at myfryeregional.com/brasbecause) are turned in at the Frye Regional Cancer Support Center at 328 North Center Street in Hickory.

Thursday, Jan. 25— A “sneak peek” is offered of the decorated bras, and voting is allowed for the “People’s Choice” award. Event is at the Frye Regional Cancer Center from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Friday, Jan. 26 – Bras Because is held at Moretz Mills from 5:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. and include live musical entertainment by The Rhythm Masters, a silent auction and wine/beer pull, delicious hors d’oeuvres donated by local restaurants and a cash bar. Tickets are $15 in advance and available now at the Frye Regional Cancer Support Center. A limited number of tickets may be available at the event for $20.
